Sitting outside my bud & breakfast while rolling up a joint on a warm September evening just feels right. While cannabis has been legal in Michigan for three years, travelers in Michigan who enjoy marijuana are largely left out in the cold. Thankfully, a number of brave & forward thinking lodging hosts like Kari Reen & Tony Brown of Tiny House Holland are working to connect with the cannabis traveler through 420-friendly lodging.
“It’s way more fun than Airbnb, and I get to incorporate my love of all things cannabis,” Kari explains. “We’re just five minutes from downtown Holland and Ottawa Beach State park which have so much to explore. I offer a free preroll at check in, an there are a couple of stores that offer cannabis gifting, and we are only 15 minutes from the dispensaries in Saugatuck.”
They thoughtfully set me up with a couple different strains & a delicious infused drink along some products from the CBD Store in Holland that included a gallon of hydrogen infused – ionized alkaline water to keep me hydrated & happy. Their attention to the guest experience extends to providing an excellent guide to all Holland has to offer, so in addition to a visit to the beach & Big Red (the iconic Holland Harbor Lighthouse) I also had a full list of restaurants to choose from with offerings from Thai food to a delicious breakfast at DeBoer Bakery (looking at you, Crab Benedict!).
Sean Roby is the CEO of Bud & Breakfast, a website for cannabis travelers that launched in 2014 and now boasts over one thousand properties worldwide. “We got our first Michigan listing about 2 and half years ago. We’re up to 20 or 30 now and we’re getting more every day. There’s a different kind of mentality when you’re a Bud & Breakfast host rather than a traditional vacation rental. We’re seeing people across the country lean into experiences that cannabis travelers are seeking from bringing in a micro-dose infused chef to CBD massages. It’s way beyond a bud bar. The whole point is to make it into a cool experience for the traveler and the people that are doing that are the people that are winning.”
With the success of Tiny House, Reen & Brown are definitely winning. They have added two additional Holland rentals you can book on Bud & Breakfast: the Forest Hills House (right over the fence from Tiny House) and the Gypsy Wagon. Check them out & happy trails to all of you!!
